Wolf O'Donnell has appeared frequently as an antagonist, playable character or cameo in Star Fox media.

Star Fox 64 logo

Wolf's appearance on Fichina (Fortuna) in Star Fox 64.

In Star Fox 64, Wolf appears with the rest of his team by default on Fichina and Venom II, and may be encountered at Bolse if he is not shot down on Fichina. Wolf himself will always target Fox until he or Fox is shot down.

Star Wolf appear by default at Fichina, immediately after a conversation about a bomb being planet at the base. Here, Wolf will taunt Fox, saying "You'll be seeing your dad soon, Fox", indicating Wolf knew who James was or had some involvement with his doom. Depending on if the player shoots down all the Star Wolf members, if not all members are defeated, this leads Wolf to laugh victoriously and shouting, "Looks like we win today, Star Fox!" as he and his team fly off into space and get payed a huge sum of money from Andross. If he is shot down during this time (and during Bolse), he'll deny that he could lose in a stammered tone.

If Star Wolf was victorious or the previous encounter was skipped, the remaining Star Wolf members will be ordered to defend the satellite base Bolse should Fox reach its destination, but failed again in another dogfight, this time suffering great injuries. Fox can opt to shoot down Star Wolf or simply go for the enemy core and ignore Star Wolf. If the flight path to Bolse included both Fichina and warping into Bolse from Sector Z, Star Wolf will appear again, leading Fox to groan at facing them again.

Star Wolf appear at Venom's air space below Area 6, where with one last chance, Wolf uses the Wolfen II along with his other teammates to defend Venom from the Star Fox team’s advancement into Andross's base. Wolf’s ship and the rest of his teammate's ships must all be destroyed in a final fight with Fox and his friends, before the confrontation with Andross. Taking shots at Wolf will cause him to remark that "You're good! But I'm better!", while shooting him down will make him complain with extreme disbelief at losing again.

Star Fox Assault
Wolf Assault Ending

Wolf in the ending cutscene.

Wolf returns in Star Fox: Assault, playing a major role compared to before.

In Mission 3, Wolf acts as one of three Wolfen bosses like before, appearing after the hiedout's transfer devices are downed. After the cutscene triggers Star Wolf's arrival, Wolf appears in the space zone, sticking nearest to the last battleship outside the main hanger. Like Star Fox 64, Wolf is a very aggressive fighter and will tail Fox without end unless Fox retreats or downs him first. If Wolf downs Fox in space, he will remark that: "You ain't your father after all...", again alluding to Wolf's implied history with James McCloud.

Wolftaunt

Wolf taunting when Fox gets defeated in space battle

In Mission 7, Wolf will take Fox wing-riding through Corneria City, circling the city for Fox to shoot down Aparoids on the ground and in the skies with the Plasma Cannon while also protecting Wolf's Wolfen from firepower. Shooting the Wolfen will not damage it but cause mere annoyance to Wolf. The Mission continues on Wolf's Wolfen when battling General Pepper's flagship after it is infected by Aparoidedation. The Mission will end if the health gauge runs out, resulting in the Wolfen exploding and Fox falling to his death. Wolf will also utter "Curses!" just before the Wolfen explodes.

In Mission 8, Star Wolf appear to help shoot down some Aparoid enemies and missiles. Shooting their targets will cause annoyance from Wolf who asks Fox: "Didn't you know that was my prey?". If Fox's shield gauge is lower than half, Wolf will ask if flying near him: "You OK? You look ragged!".

Wolf appears one last time in Mission 10, where he and his team fly with Star Fox through the tunnels before they lead the last line of Aparoid defense away from Fox so that he can reach the Aparoid Queen. Fox remembers Wolf's advice on Corneria when attacking the queen and is positive Wolf's team would live to fight another day.

Multiplayer

Wolf is playable in Star Fox: Assault's multiplayer, and is unlocked by earning an Ally medal, rewarded for completing a mission without letting a teammate be taken out, on every mission.

Wolf has the best statistic average of all characters, with greater running speed than Falco and more health than Slippy. These traits allow him to succeed at hit-and-run as well as tanking hits in the fray. He and Falco are the only two characters whose stats change depending on what aircraft they're using; Wolf's "Wolfen Skill" is ranked at 5 stars, but his "Arwing Skill" is only 2.

Upon winning a match, Wolf exclaims "Victory is mine!", pulls out two Machine Guns, and fires them frantically in a swivel motion.

Wanted: Wolf O'Donnell

Species: Canis

Team Star Wolf: Leader

Leader of Star Wolf. O'Donnell is wanted for larceny and treason. He is Fox McCloud's arch-nemesis. O'Donnell has made it his mission to destroy Team Star Fox.

Strategy Guide description

Fox McCloud's longtime rival, Wolf O'Donnell, heads up the Star Wolf team. He flies the Wolfen, a vehicle that's on par with -or possibly better than- the Arwing. Though he'd rather see Fox and his team on the receiving end of his ship's tailgunning, Wolf is crafty enough to know when to cooperate with his adversary -a definite possibility with a universe of Aparoids on the prowl.

Star Fox Command
Wolf O´Donnell

Wolf's pilot biography.

Wolf is both an antagonist and a playable character in certain missions in Star Fox Command, piloting his customized Wolfen which resembles the Aparoid Invasion model.

Fichina

Fog of War After

arriving on Fichina, they locate Lucy in one of the nearby cities. Fox mentions that Lucy was teaching astrophysics on Fichina, although she had always wanted to be a pilot. Slippy mentions that because Lucy was good friends with Krystal, she might know how to track her down, but Fox cuts him off.

After liberating Fichina from the Anglar forces, Star Wolf, who at this point are worried about the bounty that has been placed on them, emerge and attack Fox and Slippy but subsequently lose. Fox tells them he is too busy to deal with them now.

Back on board the Great Fox, Lucy shows up and informs Fox and Slippy that the Anglar attacks on Fichina are lead by Oikonny. Slippy points out the difficulty in fighting opponents without more information. Fox has to decide between attacking Oikonny (Oikonny Strikes Back, Fichina) or going to see Slippy's father, Beltino, at the Asteroid Belt (Missile Threat).

Former Rivals

Fox heads to Fichina in order to try and convince Wolf to join in his cause. Despite R.O.B.'s somewhat pessimistic outlook on the likelihood of Wolf's assistance, Fox continues onwards, only to find that the Anglar forces have invaded here as well.

After eradicating the Anglar settlers, Star Wolf emerge to attack Fox thinking that he came to collect the bounty on their heads, but they too are defeated. When the skirmish is over, Fox asks Wolf if he will attack the Anglar forces with him. Despite his obvious disdain at the prospect, Wolf agrees, but also inquires as to whether he will be paid. The two then head to Solar to reunite with Falco (The Red-Hot Planet).

Solar

The Red-Hot Planet

After teaming up with Wolf, Fox heads towards Solar to reunite with Falco. During the course of conversation, Wolf tells Fox that Krystal has joined his own team, and is in fact dating Panther. This revelation has stunned Fox, but he is still able to pay attention to the mission and the two warriors destroy the Anglar troops that have gathered on Solar's surface.

The mission is complete and Falco still hasn't shown up, but Fox's attention is elsewhere. He inquires Wolf about Krystal and Panther, and receives a hasty reply not to blame anyone. Fox then states that it just came as a shock to him, to which even Wolf recognizes that Fox still has feelings for Krystal and states that he now thinks less of Fox for being as such. Nonetheless, the two continue to wait for Falco (The Ultimate Weapon, Solar)

SFCWolf

The Ultimate Weapon

After waiting for a while, Falco finally reunites with Fox, only to find that Wolf is there too. Though angry at first, Fox convinces Falco to calm down and work together with Wolf. Falco agrees, and then remembers that he saw a large Anglar satellite weapon on his way here. Wolf comes up with a plan to destroy the machine by knocking it off balance so it can crash into the magmatic surface of Solar.

The crew proceeds to wipe out the Anglar bases on the planet's surface, and then launch their attack on the satellite. By attacking the top of the mech, they are able to force it into the lava and disintegrate it. Upon the wrecking of the satellite, Fox receives a transmission from Peppy to investigate Titania in order to find a device created by Andross that could turn the tide of the battle in their favor. As Fox and Falco depart, Wolf has the choice to join them (Wolf's Plot, Titania) or let them go on their own (Dash, Titania).

Wolf returns in Star Fox Zero, staying closer to his Star Fox 64 character design but wearing garments resembling his Assault style.
SFZ Wolf Wolfen

He first appears in Sector β, where he will enter the fray shortly after two of the Star Wolf members were shot down. If the player takes too long to take down Wolf, he will proceed to shoot down Peppy, with the latter being knocked toward Titania, and then flee after taunting Fox. If the player defeats Wolf within the time limit, Wolf will end up speeding out of there while expressing disbelief that he lost instead of being shot down like his compatriots, a possible reference to his role in Star Fox 2, where he fled when lost instead of having his ship shot down.

He can later be optionally fought on Fichina, which is unlocked after investigating Fortuna for Star Wolf activity (a reference to how Fichina was mislabeled as Fortuna in the original release of Star Fox 64). Like in Star Fox 64, the fight against him utilizes a countdown timer. When he's taken enough damage, he'll mention that he's impressed, and that he hasn't had that much fun since fighting Fox's father.

He later reappears in Mission 12, where he alongside the rest of the Star Wolf team fight Fox on Venom shortly after he disabled the shield protecting the entry point to the Corridor of Illusions leading to Andross. When defeated, he expressed disbelief that a Fox was capable of taking a Wolf out.

Notice his scar is on his right eye while his weak eye in later released games is always shown to be on his left.

Wolf was originally going to make his debut in Star Fox 2 before its cancellation until eventually being released in 2017. His ship is stronger than the ones piloted by the other members of the Star Wolf wing and he appears immediately before heading to Astropolis. Unlike the other members of the wing, Wolf would flee when his ship's shield has been depleted (much to Andross's chagrin), although not before admitting some respect to the player's piloting capabilities and vowing to return to settle the score, possibly leaving room for an undeveloped sequel. However, the game was initially unreleased and the series was rebooted for the Nintendo 64 with Star Fox 64, in which he would make his first official appearance as a rival to Fox. He is also referred to as Cap'n Wolf by Leon and Algy.

Wolf had a playable appearance in the 3rd Super Smash Bros. series game, as well as trophies and stickers. Although missing out on the Wii U & 3DS games, he will later return as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Wolf's cameo in Melee

Wolf makes a minor cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee in the introduction sequence, where he is briefly shown fighting Fox from his Wolfen. Although he himself is absent as a trophy, his ship appears and mentions him in its trophy section.

Super Smash Bros Brawl logo

Wolf makes his first playable appearance in a Super Smash Bros. game in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. To unlock Wolf, the player must complete any of the following three tasks:

  • Complete the Boss Battles mode with Fox or Falco, and then defeat Wolf in a challenger match.
  • Participate in 450 brawls, and then defeat Wolf in a challenger match.
  • Have Wolf join your party in the Subspace Emissary.

Wolf is a middle-heavyweight; much heavier than Fox and Falco, but falls at the same rate as Fox. His special moves are similar in ability to Fox's and Falco's, but they still differ greatly. Wolf is a mid-sized target, which, considering his weight, is put to his favor. In contrast to his Assault status, Wolf is a slower running character with lower recovery and jumping skills than Fox and Falco, but makes up for it with stronger attacks.

Palette Swaps

Special Moves

  • Standard- Blaster: Much unlike Fox's and Falco's, Wolf's blaster has a lower rate of fire, its shots are a lot slower and have limited range, but can cause more damage. It also features a bayonet that can cause extra damage at close range when he whips it out.
  • Side- Wolf Flash: Again, it is not like the latter two characters. Wolf will travel in a diagonal direction and it won't go so far. If Wolf collides with another character at the very apex of the launch, said character will take heavy damage and suffer a meteor strike (plummeting downwards).
  • Up- Fire Wolf: For this attack, Wolf will launch himself in the desired direction. Anyone caught in the attack will be stuck in a combo until the attack is finished. Also, "Fire Wolf" is considered to be a misnamer, because the attack has no flame and is a kick instead of traveling headfirst, although he does "fire" himself into the air. It has less startup lag than Fox and Falco's
  • Down- Reflector: Similar in ability to Fox's and Falco's reflectors, Wolf's reflector protects Wolf in front and behind, but not above, or, should he be in the air, below him. It doesn't help him in his recovery unlike the other two. Much unlike Fox's and Falco's, Wolf's is magenta and instead of being hexagonal, it takes the elliptical shape of an eye, and waves of energy appear to give off from the device on his back,. It also gives him invincibility frames at the very start of the move.
  • Final Smash- Landmaster: Wolf will jump into the air, saying "We're gonna have fun with this thing!" and then comes down in a Landmaster called the Wolfen Landmaster. According to his Final Smash trophy, Wolf analyzed Fox's Landmaster and built his own improved version, featuring a Red and Black color scheme, similar to the color of his Wolfen. It outmatches Fox's and Falco's in all categories except for traction and fuel supply. Because of the fuel shortage, Wolf can only remain in the Landmaster for 12 seconds (unlike Fox and Falco who can remain in their respective vehicles for 18 seconds). CPU-controlled usually drive the Landmaster off-screen.

Role in Subspace Emissary

Wolf does not play a major role, or influence the story of the Subspace Emissary, and is not even seen interacting with any other characters, but may join the player's party after Tabuu has been defeated. To encounter Wolf, the player must enter a particular Red Door in The Ruins stage, which will take them to Lylat Cruise after a brief cut-scene. In the cut-scene, Wolf is seen flying his Wolfen from Venom, jumping out, and landing on the cruise ship. Wolf strikes a pose, then rushes forward to attack. Although he is the only character present in the cut-scene, he appears to stare at his challenger. The player must then defeat him in a one-life stock battle, and if they win the match, Wolf joins the party. This will also unlock him if he has not yet been unlocked.

Event Matches

Wolf also has a role in some event matches and co-op events. In particular:

  • Event 36: High-Tech Special Forces: The player, as Solid Snake, has to defeat Wolf O'Donnell, Samus Aran, and Captain Falcon, all of whom are designated as bounty hunters.
  • Event 38: The Wolf Hunts the Fox: The player, as Wolf, is to defeat Fox and Falco on Lylat Cruise. Doing so on Hard Mode will unlock the song Star Wolf (Star Fox Assault) for use on the same stage.
  • Event 39: All-Star Battle x2: Wolf is among the opponents the player must face.
  • Co-Op Event 14: The Dark Guardians: One of the players plays as a tiny Wolf while fighting against a giant Charizard and a giant Donkey Kong, while the other player plays as a tiny Ganondorf.
  • Co-Op Event 19: Shadow of Andross: The players, as Fox and Falco, needs to defeat Wolf while Andross's Assist Trophy is permanently in the background attacking the players.
  • Co-Op Event 20: The Final Battle for Two: Wolf is among the opponents in this Co-Op event
  • Co-Op Event 21: The True All-Star Battle - As any character of the players' choosing, every character in the game is fought, including Wolf O'Donnell.

Although Wolf himself did not return as a playable character, he makes an appearance as a trophy. His pose is taken from Assault and Command instead of Star Fox 64 3D because no character artwork of Wolf in Star Fox 64 was ever released. Interestingly, his trophy states that he served Andross who was already antagonising the Lylat system before his exile. Aside from this, Fox's purple palette swap was a reference to Wolf.
