The Wii U is a game console made by Nintendo and the successor of the Wii. The system was released on November 18, 2012 in North America and November 30, 2012 in Europe and Australia. The Wii U is the first Nintendo console to support high-definition graphics, capable of producing video output up to 1080p, and has 2 GB with half dedicated to the console's operating system.

Available Editions

The console was released in two versions:

  •  A "Basic" white-colored version with 8 GB of internal Flash storage
  • A "Deluxe"/"Premium" black-colored version with 32 GB of Flash storage. The Deluxe package additionally includes stands for the console and for the GamePad, a charging dock for the GamePad, and a pack-in-game.

An HDMI cable is included with both versions.

The Wii U's primary controller is the Wii U GamePad, which features an embedded touchscreen. The touchscreen is used to supplement the main gameplay shown on the television or, with games supporting off-TV-play which can allow the player to continue playing games by displaying the main gameplay even when the television is off. In addition to the Wii U GamePad, a more traditional controller, called the Wii U Pro Controller, may be used. The system is backward compatible with Wii, and Wii U games may support compatibility with Wii peripherals, such as the Wii remote and the Nunchuk. It is not backward compatible with Nintendo GameCube discs, however through the use of the Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter, you can use your GameCube Controllers with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Star Fox related titles

Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi appear as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The Nintendo Land title was originally set to feature a Star Fox game in early development, although this was scrapped in the final version.

It was announced on June 16, 2015, that the newest Star Fox game Star Fox Zero will be developed by both Nintendo and Platinum Games. Physical copies of Star Fox Zero also come with a Star Fox mini-game, Star Fox Guard, however, if Star Fox Zero is bought digitally, a digital copy of Star Fox Guard can be bought at a discounted price on the Wii U E-shop.

An Amiibo figurine of Fox was released as part of the first line up of collectable, compatible, interactive figurines. This marks the first official release of Star Fox figures since the promotional Star Fox Adventures Bobblehead.

Fox is the leader of the commando unit for hire known as Star Fox. He uses both the team's mother ship, the Great Fox, and his personal Arwing fighter to challenge the evil scientist Andross. His piloting skills are top notch, but he can also bring speed and fast attacks to the battle through hand-to-hand combat.

An Amiibo figurine of Falco was released as part of the line up of collectable, compatible, interactive figurines. This marks the second official release of the Star Fox figures.

A talented pilot and part of the Star Fox™ team, Falco can be a bit rough around the edges. He once led his own galactic gang before joining up with Fox. He affects an air of cool disdain and is sometimes uncooperative, but in reality his passion for Star Fox is second to none.
