Warp Portals or Warp Gates are special gates that can launch spacecraft across space through Warp Zones if activated successfully. One of the key areas of Andross's scientific expertise was space warps, which General Pepper worried he would use as part of his invasion plans on Corneria via wormholes detected in certain places in the Lylat System.
In the games[]
Warp Gates are special gates that the Arwing can go through in "Star Fox 64", if it flies through all of the gates in a level, which are grouped close to each other, sending the Arwing (and the Arwings of the other members of Star Fox, who will fly onscreen) directly into a Warp Zone towards another location in the Lylat System.
Meteo[]
- “General Pepper's Flight Log, pg 34
Our probes have picked up enemy activity in the Meteo planetoid system. It looks like Andross has built a planetoid crusher to clear a way through the belt for his invasion fleet. We need to have the Star Fox team check it out. Keep your eyes peeled as you move through the planetoids. Their movement is usually predictable, but if any of theses rocks collide, it could send them careening off in wild directions. We've also scanned some unusual warp energy readings in the sector. If you find the source of to explore it to find out if it is part of Andross's attack.” - —
- “Seventh heaven
The Butterfly Fighters blossom from tight formations of seven ships to wide, spinning circles. Lock on when they're still close together and you'll take out the entire formation worth seven hit points. If you're shooting for the warp, though, just ignore these fighters and concentrate on staying in the correct flight path.” - —
Cornerian probes had picked up enemy activity in the Meteo planetoid system. Andross built a planetoid crusher to clear a way through the belt for his invasion fleet. If this natural defensive barrier was penetrated, Corneria would be open to attack by Andross's battleships. Pilots needed to keep a sharp eye on the floating planetoids as they flew through the system. The movement of these gigantic boulders was usually predictable, but if any of those rocks collided, it could send them careening off in wild directions. Scientific expeditions to the belt had scanned some unusual warp energy readings in the sector. These warp emissions could not be ignored since they may have been part of Andross's attack plan.
- “Medal Tips:
The best way to get the medal in Meteo is to take the warp to Katina. To enter the warp, fly through the six warp gates to enter the warp zone. You will pick up speed after you go through each warp gate, so you will need to anticipate the positions of the warp gates and react quickly. The warp is filled with enemies and power-up items. Use bombs liberally because you can easily collect more in the warp area. When you reach clusters of items, do a loop to collect as many as possible.
Intelligence
Finding the source of the warp emissions will take you to another dimension, where you can rack up some more points and score some bonus items!” - —
Seven Gates are located in Meteo, about 90% through, soon after the clusters of Butterflies and Webships. They appear on the top half of the screen, and mostly alternate between the right and left sides. With each gate passed through, the Arwing will gain speed, making it harder to pass through subsequent gates without missing one. Taking this Warp will send Star Fox through a Warp Zone to Katina, but missing even one will result in losing the trail and heading for the boss battle with the Meteo Crusher instead.
Sector X[]
- “General Pepper's Flight Log, pg 44
Our spies report that Andross has been developing a star base in Sector X, but all our remote sensors can now pick up is a huge field of space debris. We can't tell if Andross's base construction project has been destroyed by some kind of accident, or if this is part of his plan. It could also be a trap. Our scientists have also detected unusual "worm hole" radiation in the sector. In case a worm hole is part of Andross's invasion plans, we need to have you explore where the warp might lead!” - —
Cornerian spies reported that Andross was developing a star base in Sector X, but remote sensors then only detected a huge field of space debris. It is unclear if Andross's base construction project had been destroyed by some kind of accident, or if this was part of his plan. It could also have been a trap. Cornerian scientists also detected unusual "worm hole" radiation in the sector. The Star Fox Team were sent to explore the Sector and find out what happened to Andross's construction project, and determine if the worm hole was part of his invasion plan.
Four Warp Gates are present in Sector X, on the left fork in the level. In this level, the Gates consist of rectangular, ridged doors that must be shot open and then passed through. The doors are larger than the rings in Meteo.
The doors can be shot open more effectively with the Twin or Hyper Laser upgrade, or with Smart Bombs. As long as the flight path is taken towards the left side, Bill Grey will arrive help shoot the doors open in hopes of returning the favour of helping on Katina earlier (regardless of what fate was met previously).
Taking this Warp will send Star Fox through a Warp Zone to Sector Z. The route will not divert by choice afterwards unless the mission is restarted. In "Star Fox: Assault", Warp Gates are created by the Cornerian federation, such as the Orbital Gate creating gates by Re-blocks to allow a convenient reduction in long range travel to areas like Fortuna and the Aparoid Homeworld.
Warp Gates play an important role in "Star Fox Zero", as well as the expanded backstory where James McCloud apparently played an important role in the apprehension of Andross and using his space warp technology to not only send the now disgraced scientist, but also to teleport the entire planet Venom itself out of the Lylat System into another dimension.
Trivia[]
- The Gates in the Meteo Asteroid belt are circular and look like straight blue lines circling an empty center – somewhat like the Supply Rings from Star Fox. In Star Fox 64 3D, the colors of these gates flash between blue and yellow.
