SFA TrickyHead

Tricky is an EarthWalker and heir to the throne of The EarthWalker Tribe as their crown prince, the son of the King and Queen EarthWalker. When Fox McCloud came to the planet to stop it from breaking apart and exploding, Tricky was saved from the SharpClaw tribe, loyal to General Scales, and remained with Fox throughout his journey, serving as his constant companion and the two eventually became good friends.

Biography[]

Before Corneria's intervention on the plight within Dinosaur Planet, Prince Tricky was taken prisoner by SharpClaw tribe after they attacked the Queen EarthWalker within her shelter on ThornTail Hollow. Since General Pepper advised Fox McCloud to locate the Queen EarthWalker for advice, he released the seal on the shelter and encountered the distraught Queen. At first Fox was unable to understand her Dino Talk but Slippy Toad translated that she was distressed that her son Tricky was taken captive by SharpClaws to the prison compound on Ice Mountain.

With thanks the WarpStone, Fox found where Tricky was being held captive by the SharpClaw and attempted to rescue him, but Tricky ran off after Fox distracted the SharpClaw soldiers that were beating him up. Tricky and Fox first met properly at SnowHorn Wastes, after winning a race against the SharpClaw, although Fox was still unable to understand his speech until the translator kicked in and nearly got cross with Tricky upon their first meeting when the latter made a sarcastic remark about Fox landing in a hot spring or else he would be frozen.

Once reaching ThornTail Hollow, Tricky ran off to be with his mother and found her to be rather sickly after the SharpClaw had beaten her up, giving Tricky the idea to collect White GrubTub Fungus for her, which is medicine for EarthWalkers. Tricky wanted to enter the Ancient Well and help find the white mushrooms, but is unable to climb down and had to wait behind. After the Queen EarthWalker healed from her injuries, she advised that Tricky should accompany Fox the rest of the way, since he knew his way round the planet well. Fox was initially reluctant but accepted after remembering Tricky's sidekick skills.

When they went to the broken-off section of Dinosaur Planet, the snowland of DarkIce Mines, Fox and Tricky were split up when Tricky was kidnapped during a snowstorm. But, later Fox was able to rescue him again in the prison, where the daughter of the GateKeeper of the SnowHorn Tribe was also being held captive.

Eventually after returning their first SpellStone to the Volcano Force Point Temple, Fox and Tricky were passing through Moon Mountain Pass before they encountered a Krazoa, informing them about a girl who started a quest but was unable to finish it. The Krazoa explained the dire need for the Krazoa Spirits to be returned to Krazoa Palace to save the planet, including the girl's life. Tricky reminded Fox that the WarpStone can send Fox there after he collects a Krazoa Spirit, however he cannot join Fox to Krazoa Palace as the WarpStone is incapable of warping dinosaurs.

When Tricky and Fox rescued the Queen CloudRunner from the prison in Cape Claw, he thinks the Queen was a threat to him and the rest of EarthWalker tribe. The Queen tells Fox that CloudRunner and EarthWalker tribe apparently doesn't see eye-to-eye. Tricky refused to go to CloudRunner Fortress because of this, so Fox allowed Tricky to pass on that mission and had to go alone in order to find the SpellStone and save the rest of CloudRunner including Gradabug from General Scales and his SharpClaw army.

Tricky and Fox returned to the Queen EarthWalker after rescuing the Mother ThornTail's eggs from EggSnatchers, where she informed Tricky about his father being taken prisoner by General Scales to the SpellStone land of Walled City. At first the duo were unable to open that gateway to Walled City because the Queen explained that Tricky's father actually was the GateKeeper (which Tricky apparently never knew) but left energy behind a Portal Door to open the forcefield for them. Journeying to the broken-off section of Dinosaur Planet that held the Walled City, where the King was imprisoned, Tricky reunited with his father, the King EarthWalker, but was sad to know that his father was unable to return until all the SpellStones were placed back inside the ForcePoint Temple.

Once all four SpellStones were returned, the planet would still not hold together, since it required all the Krazoa Spirits to fully restore it. Tricky revealed that the last time they were on Walled City he noticed a Shrine on top of the mountain, so the pair returned to Walled City.

Tricky remained behind on Walled City when Fox had to journey back to Krazoa Palace to finish saving the planet. Tricky was saddened by his departure, though Fox cheered him up by giving him an official place on the Star Fox Team. Tricky later sent a message with his parents, via General Pepper, that expressed his thanks to Fox and his team for saving their world.

With the crisis over and Sauria saved, Tricky went on with his life and physically matured (though was still somewhat childish). When the planet came under assault from the Aparoid race, Krystal sensed a distress call from Sauria, but couldn't tell if it was from Tricky. Although no living dinosaurs could be seen, Peppy Hare was convinced that Tricky was able to get most of his people to safety, while the Star Fox team arrived and defeated the invaders.

Once the dust had cleared, Tricky was ecstatic to greet his friend Fox again (although his greeting of Fox, by pouncing on him, also crushed Fox in the process), along with seeing Krystal for the first time, who had also helped in saving Sauria when Fox first arrived on the planet. Kindly declining his offer to leave Sauria and help defeat the Aparoids, Fox motivates Tricky to repair Sauria, and Tricky resolved to do so, so Fox and Krystal could come back on their honeymoon. This embarrassed Fox, who had feelings for Krystal (which she returned, and found the idea of a honeymoon enticing), and he and Tricky had a semi-playful argument as they departed back towards the city.

Nine years later, in one scenario Fox accepted Tricky's offer to have his honeymoon on Sauria when, following the end of the Anglar Blitz and the disbanding of Star Fox, Fox traveled back to Sauria, acting on information from ROB 64, where he reunited with Krystal, whom he had broken up with. Fox reconciled with Krystal by forsaking the ways of the warrior, and the two married and settled down, later having a son named Marcus.

Appearance[]

According to the Rareware scribes, Tricky was originally intended to be the same character as Tricky the Triceratops, a boss from Diddy Kong Racing. However, since Star Fox Adventures was the only Star Fox game developed by Rare, the two characters are generally considered to be separate. Besides that, Tricky from Diddy Kong Racing was, of course, a Triceratops, whereas Tricky from Adventures lacks the trio of facial horns to categorize him as such (because his father and mother both seem to be based on either Protoceratops, Styracosaurus, or Monoclonius). Both of which are from the ceratopsian family (with each of the two having one horn on the nose rather than the trio of facial horns), Tricky is also probably more a Styracosaurus, Monoclonius, or Protoceratops than Triceratops.

Portrayal[]

He was voiced by Kevin Bayliss in "Adventures", Chet Morgan in "Assault", and Hirohiko Kakegawa in the Japanese version of "Assault".

Trivia[]

  • If the player examines Tricky after he is made a member of Star Fox, he will still be wearing his honorary members badge.
  • In "Assault" he can still be seen wearing the rope around his neck which seems odd as he should have out grown it and it seems unlikely that they would have left a rope around his neck for so long making this likely a design error or a use of reusing and modifying his Adventure model. Of course, he could be wearing a new one.
