Star Fox Armada is the name of a pitched Star Fox game for the Wii U.

Plot[]

The game would take place after the events of Star Fox 64. In the pitch document, the game is referred to as a "reboot," acting as if no games had been made since 64.

In the aftermath of the Lylat Wars, players would have been tasked with rebuilding Corneria and the Lylat system. Corneria lacks the resources necessary to rebuild its civilian and military sectors. Rather than send out its meager military and leave the Lylat system vulnerable, General Pepper hires the Star Fox team to search nearby star systems for allies and resources. Along the way, Fox and co. discover a threat greater than even Andross himself.

The game would focus on the player building their own squadron.

Gameplay[]

The game would have used a puppet visual style reminiscent of the series' early promotional image, and would have had a major focus on online multiplayer. The game would take place entirely in space. Players would be able to explore the Great Fox, from which missions would be accepted. This style of gameplay would be like an interactive menu, with Fox appearing on various decks.

Players would explore planets, sectors, installations, and asteroid belts. Resources earned through missions would be used to either upgrade vehicles (including the Great Fox itself) or be sent back to Corneria. Players would have access to starfighters, and be able to purchase the Land Master and Blue Marine.

Optional side quests would have enhanced the mercenary aspects of Fox and his team.

The main gameplay would take place on the screen, while the Wii U gamepad would show ship and mission data, akin to a ship's control panel. The story would be playable in co-op, with one player controlling the action on-screen with a Wii remote and nunchuk and the other taking the role of gunner using the Wii U GamePad, as well as handling ship repairs. This could even be done online with multiple friends controlling multiple ships. A battle mode would have also been included, offering more traditional dogfights. Players would have been able to design their own animal characters, and assign their own squadron name (e.g. "Star Lion"). Players online could interfere with missions.

Miiverse integration would have also featured.

Development[]

The game was pitched in 2013 to Retro Studios, but it was never seen by Nintendo. The idea was that since Retro had successfully worked on Nintendo's Metroid and Donkey Kong IPs, they could apply the same treatment to Star Fox. It was decided that Armada would follow-up from Star Fox 64, as the game had been the most successful Star Fox game both critically and commercially.
