The Missions of "Star Fox Adventures", are mainly determined by the game script, but may offer various optional or essential side quests.

Krystal's Story[]

Mission Objectives:[]

  • Disable General Scales' galleon
  • Explore the galleon
  • Learn control basics
  • Enter Krazoa Palace
  • Get the Krazoa Spirit
  • Return the Spirit to Krazoa Palace

The Flying Galleon[]

After the opening prologue cutscene ends, the game will instantly begin with a dogfight against the flying SharpClaw ship. Controlling Krystal on the back of her CloudRunner friend will essentially serve as an introduction to the game, almost in the comparable style of other Star Fox games.

The goal of the fight is to steer the CloudRunner with the (C-Stick) out of range of the twin dragon head's cannon fire. Tapping (A) will make the CloudRunner fire blue energy blasts as an effective attack to disable the dragon heads, which will take three successful hits before they combust and stop. Once the dragon heads are expelling fire from their heads, the CloudRunner will move into position behind the ship propellor blades. While avoiding the blades by steering, aiming for the three blades and breaking them off with the blue energy ball attack will begin another round of dogfighting the reactivated dragon heads, this time to disable them permanently. With the flying ship disarmed at the rear, the Galleon will about turn to face the CloudRunner head on and the huge Dragon masthead will launch large fireballs, whilst leaving itself open for more blue energy attacks.

Note: Since there is no health check, no matter how many hits the CloudRunner takes, the game will no be over.

Gameplay[]

With the Galleon now disarmed, Krystal is free to land on deck and explore the ship for herself, serving as an introduction to the main gameplay. Although Krystal now has a 3 heart health check, there are no enemies to harm her. Krystal can freely move around the deck to find the sound of a voice, which serves as an introduction to using (A) to interact with characters. After speaking to the caged CloudRunner about this form of game context, the door will open to the cargo hold below deck, where the Gold Key lies for Krystal to collect, which serves as an introduction to the C-Stick Inventory system.

When Krystal returns to the deck, she will trigger the encounter with General Scales, the tyrant ruler and dictator of Dinosaur Planet, who proceeds to explain his hardships he has delighted in bringing upon the other Tribes, while attempting to convince her he is not evil but misunderstood and throw her off his ship. Fortunately, Krystal is caught by her CloudRunner friend, and they continuer her mission to find the source of the distress call.

Gameplay[]

Having found the place where the distress call is coming from, Krystal once more sets off on her own to find out who sent the call for help she heard.

By using the Gold Key found previously on the Flying Galleon, Krystal can unlock the door outside the Palace, where an explosive Fuel Barrel is left lying. Krystal can pick up and throw Fuel Barrels to destroy SharpClaw crates that are blocking the way into the Palace interior and clear any Brain Squid. Once a Fuel Barrel explodes, another will reappear in the space of the Fuel Barrel Generator. By exploring the exterior and throwing Fuel Barrels to clear the obstructing crates, Krystal can uncover cracks in the walls that will lead deeper into the Palace, where flame throwing jets make crossing halls tricky, especially when there are cracked walls on the other end. As well as throwing Fuel Barrels, Krystal can also put them down on Pressure Plates to unlock doors.

Krystal has three fox-head hearts as her health check. If Krystal takes any damage, she can collect PukPuk Eggs or Dumbledang Pods to regain any lost health. On the outside deck, down the ladder and over several wide gaps, there is one optional Bafomdad waiting for Krystal to collect, which will revive her if she loses all health.

Allies[]

There are EarthWalker Soldiers lying in defeat around the Krazoa Palace, who will offer Krystal advice on game controls and give information about the planet. The EarthWalker soldier who lies near the Krazoa Shrine of Observation, is the one that sent out the distress call Krystal picked up. Under his guidance, Krystal learns the greatest importance of the Krazoa Spirits and can enter the Shrine after he explains the quest she must start to save Dinosaur Planet.

Enemies[]

As there are Brain Squid freely wandering around the Palace, Krystal is now vulnerable to attack, and unable to defend herself having lost her Staff earlier. All Krystal can do in some areas is to simply avoid them, with (X) to roll out of harms way. Krystal can defeat a Brain Squid by throwing a Fuel Barrel or a SharpClaw Basket at them, however they will respawn after a while.

On the way to the first Krazoa Spirit, there are several obstacles in the way. The Life-Force Door that is around the corner from the starting point is powered by the single Brain Squid, and is blocking the main corridor to the Test. Crossing the pit while avoiding the Brain Squid and climbing the ladder to the other side can allow Krystal to use the Fuel Barrel to destroy it and dispel the Life-Force Door. By using another Fuel Barrel placed down on the Pressure Plate, Krystal can head for the chamber of the Spirit while avoiding the flame jets and wandering Brain Squid.

By talking to the Spirit, Krystal can take up the challenge that will deem her worthy to bring it back to Krazoa Palace. The Spirit will hide itself inside one of the six baskets that form the Krazoa symbol, and the baskets will move around the room. When the baskets stop moving, Krystal must move towards the correct basket and touch it to uncover the hidden spirit before time runs out. Krystal must complete the exercise 3 times in a row to pass the Test. Picking the wrong urn will cause the Test to fail and Krystal will be sent back to restart the train from the warp point. Standing in the middle is not a good idea, as they will cause Krystal to take damage if she touches one. The burnin braziers will light her on fire if she stands too close to them.

Gameplay[]

As an introduction to Arwing gameplay, Fox is required to pilot his Arwing safely through the fixed flight path and reach the end of the route, while steering out of the way of hazards and collecting at least 1 Gold Ring out of 10 in order to open the Force Field and reach Dinosaur Planet. If the Arwing hasn't picked up even one of the required number of Gold Rings by the end of the route, or if all three fox-head Hearst are emptied by too much damage, it will trigger a failure cutscene and restart the destination select screen.

The Arwing can steer with the (Control-Stick), using (A) to shoot lasers and (B) to fire any Smart Bombs after they are collected. Although there is no Boost & Brake meter to display like traditional Star Fox gameplay screen layout, by pressing (X) the Arwing will hit the brakes and (Y) can fire the booster. Pressing (Z) or (R) will create the Barrel Roll technique to deflect enemy firepower.

Enemies[]

As there are drifting asteroids and hostile fighters along the flight path, the Arwing lasers can be used to destroy them. Small asteroids can be taken out with a few single shots, and each mine can be blasted in a single hit. By aiming with the Arwing's range finder, tapping the (A) button can be an effective way to clear multiple targets and rack up a score.

There are also larger asteroids that pose a greater threat to the Arwing, as they are indestructible. The only course of action is to simply brake/boost or tilt the ship and slip by them.

Gameplay[]

After Fox completes his Arwing Mission through outer space, he will usually make a landing at ThornTail Hollow, which is the entry point of Fox's mission on Dinosaur Planet, serving as an introduction to the majority of the main gameplay. Fox will need to travel back to this location whenever he needs to use the Arwing to fly to another destination.

Fox can freely explore anywhere around ThornTail Hollow and inspect the environment, although he will unarmed and limited as to what he can do until he acquires his most important item of his Mission. Like Krystal, Fox has three fox-head hearts as his health meter, which he can also refill by collecting PukPuk Eggs or Dumbledang Pods. He also has his P.D.A guidance with him, everywhere he goes when outside the Arwing, which he can use with (D-Pad) to get a readout on characters and objects, scan for Fuel Cells or read Maps after buying them from the ThornTail Store.

In a flower patch across from the Arwing landing site and before the Queen EarthWalker's shelter, Krystal's magical Staff is sticking out of the ground and emitting rings of energy, awaiting to be acquired. Once Fox approaches the Staff and picks it up, Krystal will contact Fox and explain how to use the Staff properly for combat and interaction with the environment. After Fox defeats the four SharpClaw Soldiers outside the Queen EarthWalker's shelter, a red switch will appear above the locked entry point, and Krystal will confirm that her Staff has accepted Fox as its master, triggering the hidden Magic Cave near the Ancient Well and ladder to SnowHorn Wastes.

Inside the Magic Cave, Fox can collect the important Fire Blaster staff upgrade, a useful technique for attacking far off enemies, lighting torches or hitting specific switches. After Fox gains the Fire Blaster, a Fire Blast switch appears as the gate closes, serving as an opportunity to test the new skill. By collecting the Staff Upgrade, it serves as an introduction to assigning any (C-Stick) Inventory to (Y) to instant responsiveness.

Bomb Spore Plants grow all over Dinosaur Planet, and give off floating Bomb Spores that Fox can collect and store in his bag to plant in Bomb Spore Planting Patches, and detonate with the Fire Blaster to break down cracked walls or ground to proceed any further. Fox is first required to use this tactic when having to enter the WarpStone's garden.

Allies[]

Hence the name, ThornTail Hollow is home to the friendly ThornTails, as well as the Queen EarthWalker. Although Slippy's translator is not yet operational, Fox can still talk to any of the grazing ThornTails for information about Dinosaur Planet and gaming tips.

After Fox defeats the four yellow SharpClaw and enters the Queen EarthWalker's shelter, she will ask him to rescue her captured son Prince Tricky from the Ice Mountain, and by sending out a bellowing dino call, cause the ThornTail resting in front of the cracked wall to move, allowing Fox to open the wall with a Bomb Spore Plant and enter the WarpStone's garden, so he can ask to be warped to Ice Mountain.

When entering the ThornTail Hollow's Store, Fox is introduced to the ShopKeeper, who acts rudely and speaks his mind, but is nevertheless an ally as he sells many important items that Fox will need to buy and progress further.

At first, the WarpStone won't seem cooperative, until Fox delivers him the Rock Candy as a token of appreciation, making him into another valuable ally, as he can warp Fox to Ice Mountain, let him enter the Game Well Maze or warp him to Krazoa Palace as long as he has a Krazoa Spirit to take back there.

Enemies[]

Once Fox collects the Staff and approaches the Queen EarthWalker's shelter, four yellow SharpClaw troopers will emerge to challenge him to a fight, which serves as an introduction to the game's combat system. By tapping the (A) button and moving the (Control Stick), Fox can perform effective combat moves to eliminate each SharpClaw. Pressing (R) will let Fox block any attacks made against him.

There are many Red MushGus Mushrooms around ThornTail Hollow, as well as other areas across Dinosaur Planet, which give off toxic spores when Fox comes too close to them. These Mushrooms are indestructible, but can be hit with the Staff to temporarily daze them if Fox wants to get past them. The damage made from MushGus spores is minimal and health can be easily recovered in ThornTail Hollow, so it may be best to simply avoid them.

ThornTail Store[]

As Fox can only carry 10 Scarabs at first, there are some items for sale in the Store that cannot be purchased yet. The Rock Candy is a required purchase in order to convince the WarpStone to be of help to Fox. Although optional, the many Maps for sale can be very helpful additions for gameplay, by using the P.D.A Map function, as it will prevent Fox from getting lost and may uncover hidden areas and passageways to look for, so it is advisable to buy them before travelling to the areas. Below highlights what Fox can buy by having 10 Scarabs:
