It's time to try our new weapon!
—Shogun's pilot

The Shogun, also known as Shogun Warlord or Saru Death II (サルデスII) in Japan, is a powerful mech used by the Venomian Army which serves as the second boss for Sector Y in Star Fox 64. It is deployed by the Saruzin carrier immediately after the two Shogun Warriors are defeated by the Star Fox Team. It was piloted by an unidentified monkey.

The Shogun Warlord mech is an ape-shaped combat space suit, armed with a blaster laser pistol and a shield. It's method of space travel is a built-in jet pack, able to create great bursts of speed, able to dodge the Arwing's combat computer. The pilot is an ape, wearing an ivory helmet with twin ear covers, an ebony visor and Andross's insignia printed on the crown.

In the game

In Star Fox 64 and the 3DS rerelease, the Shogun warlord is the final boss of Sector Y. After the destruction of the twin Shogun Warriors, the Saruzin will carry the Shogun onto the field and will fly around the stage, shooting at the Arwings with greater speed and aggression than it's predecessors. Its shield can absorb the Arwings' Laserblasts, but it is relatively fragile, and will break off after taking several hits. The Shogun is much more agile than the Shogun Warriors and is that much harder to hit, but its pilot makes the huge mistake of periodically landing on the deck of the carrier for short periods of time and shooting at the Arwings while standing still. This makes him an easy target for laser-fire.

Enemy Recon

Before you duel with the Shogun warlord, you must first defeat a pair of Shogun warriors. The robotic duo, which is worth a total of eight hit points, bullishly charges you and assails you with pistol fire. The warlords's combat tactics are similar, but its strong armor, protective shield and agile manoeuvres make it a far fiercer foe.

The warlord is armed with a high powered laser gun. One hit can considerably damage your Arwing, so avoid being an easy target by constantly moving.

The Shogun warlord deflects lasers with its shield. To destroy it, relentlessly blast away at it with your lasers.

Enemy Recon

The flagship of the Sector Y offensive is the Saruzin. Aboard is the Shogun warlord, the guardian robot that oversees Andross's galactic fleet. You can easily target the robot when it stands on the ship's deck, so attack it there before it launches itself off the runway.

Corneria's main battle fleet suffered severe losses in Sector Y. A huge space battle had left the flagship crippled-- or perhaps worse. Debriefed survivors told tales of a new attack squadron of gigantic, humanoid battle suits in the area. Although it may have been too late to rescue the Cornerian fleet from disaster, the Star Fox Team stormed the area and knocked out the new iron soldiers of Andross. After a sufficient beating, Shogun was defeated. The pilot's last word was a frustrated scream, and the robot exploded.

Other Info

  • Although more models did not appear after the Lylat Wars, Oikonny's Rebel Army's uprising featured a very similar mecha at one point during the Battle of Fortuna that was apparently a prototype given what the characters stated. The prototype was later encountered at the Asteroid Field in the Aparoid Base construction area, only this time it was infected by the Aparoids.
  • Going by the pilot's introduction, the Shogun was apparently a recent development at the time they fought.

  • The name Shogun is the Japanese equivalent of "General".
  • The Shogun's pilot looks very similar to Granga, considering they are both apes.
  • Like the Shogun Warriors, this boss is a full-on reference to Mobile Suit Gundam. Fittingly, it happens to be equal to that of a Gundam. RX-78-2, to be precise. It even launched from a catapult in a similar fashion.
