—Peppy Hare

Peppy Hare is a retired member of the legendary Star Fox team. He served with previous leader James McCloud and wingmate Pigma Dengar. After the former's death and the latter's betrayal of the team, Peppy joined the new Star Fox team, consisting of Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, and Slippy Toad. An experienced pilot, he has learned many tricks in his years of flying, and is also very knowledgeable about Andross's forces, since he once had to escape captivity at their hands. Even though Peppy is older than all the other Star Fox team members, he declined the leadership role and insisted that the younger Fox McCloud take over the team after James was slain by Andross. After Pigma's betrayal and James' capture, Peppy narrowly escaped to return to Corneria to inform Fox of his father's fate. Ever since then, Peppy serves as Fox's mentor and father figure and frequently gives Fox instructions and advice throughout the course of the games.

Biography

Lylat Wars

StarFoxFounders

James and Peppy formed a new team of mercenaries for hire along with Pigma.

Peppy served in the Cornerian army alongside James and Pepper before pulling out to become a founding member of the mercenaries for hire team Star Fox. Five years after the banishment of Andross, Peppy along with James McCloud and Pigma Dengar were called to planet Venom by General Pepper to investigate strange activity coming from the planet. Upon their arrival, Pigma betrayed the team as Peppy and James were taken into captivity by Andross. James was supposedly killed, and Peppy barely managed to escape but learned a few tricks about the Androssian ways. Returning home, Peppy informed James' son, Fox, about his father's fate, and the new team was born.

Peppy later became part of the new team, led by Fox McCloud, and the two new members, Slippy Toad and Falco Lombardi. Occasionally the team would encounter the rival mercenary group, Star Wolf, led by Wolf O'Donnell and consisting of, Leon Powalski, Andrew Oikonny, and former Star Fox team member, Pigma Dengar. Peppy was the main target of Pigma, chasing him without remorse and remarking about being his "old pal". After Star Wolf and Andross were defeated by Fox, Peppy asked Fox what the matter was when noticing him searching in space for something, but Fox assured Peppy that nothing was wrong before Team Star Fox returned home and were paid handsomely by General Pepper.

Titania Incident

During the four years of peace in the Lylat System, Peppy and the rest of the Star Fox team had little in terms of work. They then received a S.O.S. signal from Katt Monroe, and Peppy was unsure of whether to respond to her S.O.S., as she had a criminal record. However, they eventually went to the source of the S.O.S., Titania, due to Falco rushing out to help Katt before a proper decision could be made. They then went over to one of the Titanian research bases, run by Captain Shears. Shears agreed to help Star Fox out to find Falco, under the condition that they stop some Venomian Army remnants who allegedly stole some of Andross's research that the base planned to replicate for peaceful applications. After the Star Fox team fought against the supposed Androssian vessel, as well as Fox getting into a dogfight against Falco, Peppy gave Fox a severe tongue-lashing in regards to fighting Falco, viewing it as irresponsible on Fox's part, asking him what his father would think of him. However, when he learned the reason why Fox got into a dogfight with Falco in the first place, he became disturbed at the implications of what is happening, as well as growing more suspicious of Shear's true motives after realizing that the Titanian base seemed too quiet for supposedly being in danger, and deployed Slippy to investigate because he was too old for active duty and Fox's Arwing was going under repairs. Afterwards, they were hailed by the supposed Venomian Army remnants, who turned out to be Katt's group. After learning that they had stolen some files from the base and planned to leak them onto the black market, although they didn't actually know what was inside the contents of the file, Peppy requested that ROB open the files to see what was really going on. They then learned upon reviewing the files that it was even worse than previously believed: Shears wasn't planning on reviving Andross's research, but Andross himself via cloning. Peppy then realized that he inadvertently placed Slippy in grave danger earlier and attempts to call Slippy back, but learns from ROB that his communication with Slippy was cut a while back. Peppy then acted as the monitor of the mission to rescue Slippy, telling Fox where to go while Katt and her team acted as the distraction. After Fox rescued Slippy and defeated both Shears and a newly revived Andross, Peppy tried to get away from a cloning culture fluid-soaked Slippy.

Plight of Sauria

Four years afterwards, during the Sauria Crisis, Peppy retired as a pilot because of his old age and became an adviser and navigator within the Great Fox, alongside ROB 64 (and during this time, Slippy). His role of studying Saurian Maps and the planet's History during this period of peril was important, but minor nonetheless. He was glad to receive the monetary reward knowing that Great Fox was in dire need of repairs and managed to remember he received a message from Krystal in time for her arrival on the bridge.

Aparoid Invasion and Retirement

Peppy still stayed aboard the Great Fox and gave valuable advice to the Star Fox team, which now included Krystal taking his place as fourth pilot. When chasing Pigma into the Asteroid Belt, Peppy made a note that the Pig was always ahead of everyone, having said "Just like Pigma. He never missed a trick."  By the time the team, with Star Wolf's help, had defeated the Aparoids at Corneria, Peppy somehow found his way back into an Arwing after General Pepper was captured by the Aparoids and arrived at the last moment to save Pepper from dying (Although the attempt also led to him being injured, jokingly stating that it "looks like [Peppy will] never make retirement now..." before groaning, and then requesting that Fox contact the Medical Corps.).

During the Invasion of the Aparoid Homeworld, a shield was generated, blocking the team's progress. It was at this point that Peppy boldly sacrificed himself and crashed the Great Fox into the shield, destroying it and the Great Fox in the process. Despite the protests of the team and signs that Peppy was being infected by the Aparoids, he crashed into the shield. This allows the team to continue onward to thwart the Aparoid Queen. The team is shocked and saddened by the apparent loss of their veteran friend, but they eventually resolve to move on.

During the battle against the Aparoid Queen, the Queen impersonated Peppy, among other supposedly deceased acquaintances, and attempted to discourage the team. After the Star Fox team's victory and escape, a moment of mourning is interrupted by the arrival of both Peppy and ROB, who had escaped the destruction of the Great Fox using an emergency escape ship. Fox reveals that he was well aware of Peppy and ROB's survival, and Peppy tells the team that he intends to retire for good.

Anglar Blitz

During the Anglar Blitz, Pepper had fallen ill and was confined to his sickbed, so at his request his old friend Peppy replaced him as the general of the Cornerian Army and, during the game, it is revealed that he has a daughter named Lucy Hare, who teaches astrophysics at Fichina. On the battlefield, Peppy piloted his own Arwing which resembles the Aparoid Invasion model. In one ending it is revealed that he is the widower of his wife, Vivian.

Other Appearances

Star Fox Comics

Peppy appears as a supporting character in the Nintendo Power comics, where the continuity and his looks are based on the SNES era.

Lylat Wars Comic

Peppy is a major character in the Lylat Wars Comic, filling the same advisor roles he holds in the games. Peppy first rescues Fox from tailing Venomian Fighters on Corneria City. The experienced Rabbit's piloting advice is extended from Fox towards Slippy, who hadn't yet finished the Cornerian Flight Academy before Fox reformed the team, advising Slippy to use a Barrel Roll to shake off his pursuers (this references his popular internet meme). At the Meteo Asteroid Belt, Peppy warns Fox not to be too over confident before just they are ambushed by the Star Wolf Team. Back at the Great Fox's hangar, Slippy asks Peppy about Fox's violent streak towards Pigma, to which he retells the tragic story of the original Star Fox Team. Peppy appears to blame himself for the disappearance of his best friend, calling himself a coward and only hoping that he'll see Jimmy again someday. At Solar, Peppy points out that he has heard rumors of Andross developing a bioweapon and is the only member of the team not to be sabotaged by Pigma's infiltration. Arriving at Venom's surface, Peppy and Slippy are overwhelmed by the Venomian Army and are forced to retreat, but await Fox's triumphant return and they return to Corneria.

Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins

Star Fox Zero The Battle Begins ROB1

Peppy searches for something important on Great Fox's bridge.

Peppy appears in a major role during the events of the promotional anime, made for the then upcoming Star Fox Zero, identical to his nagging and irritable manners depicted in the Farewell, Beloved Falco manga.

En-route to Corneria from a ten day flight from Sauria, on Great Fox's bridge, Peppy Hare is searching for something and interrupts the team's travel plans by reminding them they are not on a vacation and moans over the messy state of the bridge from Slippy's toys and that someone made a mess of his desk. Underneath his desk, Peppy finally find his good luck charm; which is a lock of Pepper's fur which he keeps dear as a reminder of their friendship, before finally reminding the team that Andross's army had been at war with the Cornerian army for years, hence why Peppy is irritated that the team are messing around. ROB then reports a distress signal from General Pepper that the Androssian forces are attacking Corneria City. The footage is viewed onscreen while Peppy is noticeably nervous about the appearacne of the warp zone and Pepper wonders about something that Andross dared to rebuild, while Falco ponders why they don't blow the tower up when they caught the army by surprise, which Pepper reveals that they came for him.

The team depart for takeoff, and wonder how Andross's army got past the Cornerian defences, which Peppy knows to be the work of a teleportation device, yet Slippy can't accept Andross to be capable of creating such technology. Slippy then suggests that the crab robots are using bio-tracking tech to find General Pepper and thinks they need to separate his bio-signal from their sights, which Falco thinks is crazy and gives Peppy an idea, pulling Slippy away to the lab.Peppy and Slippy return with two test tubes containing what looks like a D.N.A. strand within, and Fox notices that Peppy's good luck charm is missing the lock of Pepper's fur but they have no time to wait and depart for takeoff, after Slippy insists they wear his new visor headbands.

On Corneria's seas, Peppy then fires the other test tube item out and creates a blast radius which draws the other robots away from the tower, because Slippy used the fur from Peppy's lucky charm to make missiles of Pepper's life signs to draw their targeting away.

Star Fox Zero The Battle Begins Granga

Granga hacks into the channel to taunt Fox and the team.

The four Arwing's then use a unified Smart Bomb volley to decimate the enemy fleet until Slippy and Peppy are grazed by impressive firepower coming from the warp portal, which is revealed to be the AndrosaGranga interrupts the communications and questions Fox daring to halt his mission and promises to squash them like the insects he thinks they are. Fox orders Slippy and Peppy to pull back and recover and let him and Falco take the ship down. When the Androsa eventually starts to fall, Granga gets ready to takeoff and retreat, cursing the Star Fox team and warning them about Andross hearing what happened and it will be the end of them.

The Cornerian people cheer for the victory and General Pepper thanks Star Fox for saving them once more, and hates to ask for more of them but since there's a battle going on in Sector α and requests urgent back up support from them, however, General Pepper speaks with Peppy on his secret private channel because the discussion is strictly between them concerning that the attack was only the beginning and then discuss the importance of a weapon that Andross dared to rebuild. Pepper asks Peppy to do what must be done when the time comes, but it must kept strictly between them and the team must not find out.

Reception

Peppy has remained another fan favorite over the years. Peppy's phrase from Star Fox 64, "Do a barrel roll!", has become a popular internet phenomenon.

Trivia

  • Peppy's Star Fox 64 quote, "Do a Barrel Roll" has became an Internet meme and is one of the Star Fox series' most well known quotes. In fact, a music video of the meme that is on the internet is based off the 1979 Dschinghis Khan disco song, "Moskau".
  • Despite retiring before the events of Star Fox Adventures, Peppy keeps returning to his Arwing and taking part in the fight, all the way into the events of Star Fox Command.
  • With 134 quotes, Peppy is the most talkative character in Star Fox 64. The 3DS release added seven new ones.
  • Considering the many similarities between Star Fox and Star Wars, Peppy's personality is like Obi-Wan's just like how Fox McCloud is to Luke Skywalker and Falco Lombardi is to Han Solo. Like Obi-Wan, Peppy is wise, caring and fatherly and survived an incident which Fox's father apparently did not survive, similar to Obi-Wan surviving the Jedi order's fall. His quote, "I've got a bad feeling about this, Fox", has Star Wars reference as well.
  • In Star Fox Zero The Battle Begins short anime premier, Peppy's last name is misspelled as "Peppy Hair" instead of "Peppy Hare" during the transmission channel.
