All games in the Star Fox series feature Peppy Hare as a supporting or playable character, and makes cameos in spin-off media.

1993[]

StarFox 1993

Peppy's debut in the Star Fox series was marked in "Star Fox". His famous advisory role began here as well, as he gave advice on how to perform certain maneuvers. In contrast to later games, he has no established connection to Fox's father or given any seniority traits which were introduced later.

Peppy is the moderating force on the Star Fox team. His gentle character and wealth of knowledge make him an invaluable balance to the chaotic chemistry of the other Star Fox Team members. His skill as a pilot is an added plus.

In "Star Fox 64", Peppy served the same role he did in "Star Fox"; as an adviser. As long he is present on the battlefield, Peppy will shout out useful pilot techniques, surrounding warnings and how to defeat the Androssian lieutenants. Evidently, Peppy was a member of the previous generation Star Fox team, alongside Pigma and James McCloud. This game spawned his famous "Do a Barrel Roll!" quote, among others. Peppy and Pigma target each other in the occasional dogfights between Star Fox and Star Wolf, due to Pigma's treason against his old team and the two appear to have formed an arch rivalry since then, referring to doing in his "old pal". Peppy also compares Fox's piloting skills in the game to that of his father's, making comments such as "Your father helped me like that too" and the like. Peppy's transmission and base color is red.

Peppy is also a playable character in Versus Mode via the Nintendo 64 controller in the second socket.

In the space of two years after the loss of James, Peppy became part of the new team, led by Fox and the two new members, the more honest and loyal Slippy and Falco. Despite the fact he was older and more experienced than everyone else, he insisted that it was Fox who should be the leader. Occasionally the team would encounter the rival mercenary group, Star Wolf, led by Wolf O'Donnell and consisting of, Leon Powalski, Andrew Oikonny and former Star Fox team member, Pigma Dengar. Peppy was the main target of Pigma, chasing him without remorse and remarking about being his "old pal". After Star Fox defeated Star Wolf, when Fox orders everyone to let him go by himself to defeat Andross, Peppy, like the others, was horrified and tried to stop him, but he didn't listen. He is then full of relief when Fox returns victorious, and then asks him what the matter was when noticing him searching in space for something, but Fox assured Peppy that nothing was wrong before Team Star Fox returned home and were paid handsomely by General Pepper.

A long time friend of Fox's father, Peppy Hare is the senior member of the Star Fox Team. An experienced pilot, he has learned many tricks in his years of flying, and is also very knowledgeable about Andross's forces, since he once had to escape captivity at their hands. Even though Peppy is older than all the other Star Fox Team members, he declined the leadership role and insisted that the younger Fox McCloud take over the team after Fox's father, James McCloud, was slain by Andross.

Star Fox Adventures

Peppy appears as a supporting teammate again in "Star Fox Adventures". He has retired from flying and now resides in the Great Fox, giving Fox advice whenever he is flying and helping with navigation while Fox is on land. When contacting Peppy on the communicator, he will upload a world map for viewing directing, since he spends his time studying ancient records on Dinosaur Planet and translates directions on Fox's P.D.A scanner map after Fox buys the maps in the ThornTail Store, but will advise Fox to contact Slippy for advice if the work within the current position is done yet.

On the game's main menu, Peppy is fast asleep until he is selected to make changes to the screen sizing, and able to play the credits after collecting the Scarab Well's Cheat Token and then throwing it into the Warp Stone's game maze once.

Four years afterwards, during the Sauria Crisis, Peppy retired as a pilot because of his old age and became an adviser and navigator within the Great Fox, alongside ROB 64 (and during this time, Slippy). His role of studying Saurian Maps and the planet's History during this period of peril was important, but minor nonetheless. He was glad to receive the monetary reward knowing that Great Fox was in dire need of repairs and managed to remember he received a message from a young woman named Krystal in time for her arrival on the bridge. He is the only member to not poke fun at Fox for his obvious crush on her.

Instruction booklet description[]

2005[]

Assault logo

"Star Fox: Assault" marks another major role for Peppy. Although he has fully retired as a pilot, he still gives advice from the safety of the Great Fox, alongside ROB 64, which includes instructions on how to maneuver the Arwing and Landmaster, directions for Pilot-based missions, and how to avoid enemy attacks. Peppy climbs into an Arwing on Corneria and risks his life to save General Pepper when Pepper's flagship was infected by Aparoidedation. Near the end, it was believed by the team that Peppy had died when he risked his life a second time and crashed the partly Aparoidedized Great Fox into the barrier blocking the pathway into the core of the Aparoid Homeworld, but he survived and had escaped using one of the ship's escape pods, albeit with enough injuries to have him wear bandages, then promising that he's really going to retire after.

Multiplayer[]

Peppy is an unlockable playable character in Assault's Versus Mode. To unlock him, 15 VS. Mode matches have to be played. He has the best average pilot skill in the game (tied with Fox's), the slowest running speed, and the best jump. His Arwing and Landmaster skills are average, and he has the second lowest health stat, only having more health than Falco. Like Slippy, his blaster charges more quickly than normal to compensate for his poor mobility, as it charges even faster than Slippy's.

Peppy is geared more towards expert players. His poor mobility and low health hinder his survivability, but his jump makes him an expert at averting too much damage in close-quarters situations. His very high jump also allows him to reach places other characters would need ramps or vehicles to access, so he excels at sniping. His Blaster charges four times as fast as normal, allowing him to lay on heavy damage without the need for more advanced weaponry. However, his low amount of health and lack of mobility make his disadvantage state among, if not the worst of the cast: while his jumps are useful, he can't always rely on them, and due to his lack of speed when he's not on an Arwing or a Landmaster, he has very few options to deal with pressure, and he is subsceptible to be killed more than the other characters.

Despite retiring from active flight duty, Peppy still stayed aboard the Great Fox and acted as a secondary commander where he and ROB would give battlefield instructions and valuable advice to the Star Fox team, which now included Krystal taking his place as fourth pilot. When chasing Pigma into the Asteroid Belt, Peppy made a note that the Pig was always ahead of everyone, having said it was like Pigma to never miss a trick. By the time the team, with Star Wolf's help, had defeated the Aparoids at Corneria, Peppy somehow found his way back into an Arwing after General Pepper was captured by the Aparoids and arrived at the last moment to save Pepper from a fatal crash, although the rescue attempt also led to him being injured too, jokingly stating that it he would seemingly never make full retirement before groaning, and then requesting that Fox contact the Medical Corps.

During the Invasion of the Aparoid Homeworld, the Great Fox acted as the Cornerian Fleet's leading flagship with Peppy and ROB at the helm and in full command of the invasion. In the skirmish against the Cornerian Fleet and the Aparoid Air Force, Peppy lamented that he was not putting up a good fight as the Cornerians were losing badly and forced to retreat after taking 20% in casualties. Despite the success of the ground Mission to turn off a powerful shield generated over the entrance to the planetary interior, another shield was generated that blocked the team's progress. It was at this point that the Great Fox was badly under attack and Peppy boldly chose to spearhead the Great Fox into the shield before he and the mothership could be fully assimilated, and give the team a vital chance to enter the planet interior. Despite the crashed Great Fox breaking the shield, Peppy demanded the protesting shocked and saddened team to continue onward to thwart the Aparoid Queen.

During the battle against the Aparoid Queen, the Queen impersonated Peppy, among other supposedly deceased acquaintances, and attempted to discourage the team. After the Star Fox team's victory and escape, a moment of mourning is interrupted by the arrival of both Peppy and ROB, who had escaped the destruction of the Great Fox using the bridge as an emergency escape ship. Fox reveals that he was well aware of Peppy and ROB's survival, and Peppy tells the team that he intends to retire for good.

Peppy in Command

Peppy in Command as General of the Cornerian Army.

Peppy has appeared in "Star Fox Command". At Pepper's request, Peppy is now General of the Cornerian Army, taking the now ill Pepper's place. Peppy's role is now both advisory and similar to that of Pepper's from the previous games.

During the Anglar Blitz, General Pepper had fallen ill and was confined to his sickbed, so at his request it was his old friend Peppy who he elected to replace him as the commander-in-chief of the Cornerian Army. General Peppy also entrusted his daughter Lucy Hare, who was teaching astrophysics at Fichina, to remain on Corneria and protect their homeworld in his place while Peppy flew to join up with his old Star Fox team. Instead of a flagship akin to the one piloted by General Pepper, Peppy piloted his own Arwing on the battlefield, which resembled the Aparoid Invasion model. Following the defeat of the Anglar armies and their Emperor, the successful Cornerians threw a celebration which Peppy and Lucy attended but slipped away from to fondly remember their lost wife and mother, Vivian.

Whenever Peppy is a selectable pilot for gameplay, he will fly an Arwing identical to the ones used in the Aparoid Invasion era, while the background music plays a rendition of the "Hit the Planet" cutscene in Assault.

Star-fox-zero

Peppy returns in "Star Fox Zero", still giving advice and gameplay hints like before. Peppy appears in the opening cinema where James apparently sacrificed himself in order to let Peppy make an escape, evident when Peppy's critically damaged Arwing escapes laser from from several Harlock-class Frigates. He is the focal point of the mission on Titania where his Arwing has crashed into a sandpit and become a captive of the Scrapworm, identical to when Slippy was a captive of Goras in Star Fox 64. He is also the playable character in the Salvadora secret level where it's revealed that he managed to recover on his own and single-handedly takes on the heavily armed battleship. Performing the Barrel Roll will cause him to shout "Barrel Roll" every time. In the trailer, Peppy is seen driving a Landmaster, where the cockpit has a photograph of himself and his army comrades and friends, James and Pepper, but the photograph appears to be torn off in the right corner which is likely where Pigma would have been had it not been for his treason.

Peppy appears in "Star Fox 2" as one of six playable characters (the four males plus females Miyu and Fay). The game was originally scrapped in mid-1995 to make way for the then-upcoming Nintendo 64, and ROMs of the game in sundry stages of development were later leaked on the Internet. However, the final version of the game was pre-installed on the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017.
