Messer (メッサー Messā), also referred to as Aparoid Fighter or Aparoid Flyer, is a basic aerial Aparoid unit. It is a common airborne enemy that appears in several Missions throughout the Story Mode of Star Fox Assault.

Characteristics[]

The Messer is a large flying insect-like Aparoid about the size of an starfighter. Its basic appearance is very simple, having a rear section that resembles the abdomen of insects, and three wing-like appendages, presumably for steering. This creature is armed with only one laser cannon, though it has proven itself to be quite an nuisance when traveling in large swarms. A single blast from the Landmaster can kill it, as well as a rocket from the Homing Launcher. The Arwing can take it down in 2-5 hits, depending on how powerful Lasers are.

In the game[]

Mission 2: Katina[]

During the battle at the Katina Outpost, large numbers of Messers can be found near the outer rim of the base. Your comrades keep them from firing on you, but you can sometimes kill them with the Landmaster of you lock on to them with a charged laser.

Mission 5: Meteo[]

Messers appear in the Meteo asteroid belt, and they are joined by the Darts and the Paraffins.

Mission 6: Sauria[]

Messers comprise some of the Aparoid air forces that harass Fox and team, but this time they are joined by Egfants and Fangles along with the Darts.

Mission 8: Beltino Orbital Gate[]

Hundreds of Messers comprise much of the attack force sent to assail the station, but are assisted by Darts and Fangles. When the Aparoid Missiles arrive, so do a decent number of Paraffins.

Mission 9: Aparoid Homeworld[]

Messers are part of the air forces that swarm the skies when you have to destroy the Aparoid Hatchers in the base.

Mission 10: Homeworld Core[]

A variant of this enemy, called the Messard, Messerd, or Messerard (メッサード Messādo) appears to be exclusive to the underground tunnels leading to the core of the planet where the Aparoid Queen resides. While it behaves similarly to its more common counterpart, the Messerd is easily distinguished by its silver gray coloration. Its firepower and durability has also increased. It may even try to ram into Fox's Arwing should he leave it alone. It is present in the Core in some locations, but are generally outmatched by other flying Aparoids like the Fangles, Guidarts, and Parafahs (the latter three of which are upgraded versions of their predecessors encountered in prior missions), also found within the Homeworld Core. With the death of the queen and the destruction of their homeworld, these units perished, along with the rest of their kind.

Official Data[]

Messer/Messard: It fires a machine gun at the Arwing as it flies. The Messard is an enhanced version of the Messer, and if left unattended and not destroyed, it will hit you from behind.

Trivia[]

Its name could likely be based on the word "Messer", which is the German word for "Knife".
