I received a garbled distress signal. It said something about a mountain hidden in a storm. Whoever they are, they sound in great danger!
—Krystal

Krystal is a vixen and the most recently-recruited member of the Star Fox team. She serves as the team's main telepath, additional fighter pilot, and she is also Fox McCloud's main love interest (although he is in competition with Panther Caroso, who is also infatuated with her). She made her first appearance in the series in "Star Fox Adventures". Krystal joined Star Fox almost immediately after the Plight of Sauria, taking Peppy Hare's place as the fourth pilot. Her telepathic abilities were first seen in "Adventures" and put to good use during the Aparoid Invasion. Using her abilities, she can read thought patterns and sense Distress Signals, which is vital for the Star Fox team as they help out other planets. In Star Fox Command, Krystal left Star Fox after Fox asked her to go out the team, and joined The Cornerian Army. Sometime later, Fox returned and begged her to rejoin his team. Since none of the game's endings have been confirmed canon, however, the fate of Krystal and the Star Fox team after the Anglar Blitz remains unknown.

In a 2017 Reddit AMA, Dylan Cuthbert stated that none of Command's endings are the actual one. This confirms what was already mentioned in the 2006 interview with IGN where Dylan Cuthbert and Takaya Imamura said, a potential Command sequel wouldn't depend on the endings and rather start in the middle.

Biography

Krystal was originally native to Cerinia, a planet outside of the Lylat System. Krystal became proficient in using a powerful staff weapon, as well as her natural abilities of telepathy. Cerinia was reported to be completely destroyed in an unknown disaster, in which Krystal's parents were killed and she was left as the only known survivor. Krystal, seeking answers concerning her parent's deaths and their home planet's destruction, she journeyed to the edge of Lylat System, where she came to Dinosaur Planet (later known as "Sauria") after receiving a distress call during her search.

Upon arriving at Dinosaur Planet, the source of the signal, Krystal encountered and befriended one of the noble CloudRunners and immediately learned of the troubles of the planet's natives, and their continued peril at the hands of the tyrannical dictator General Scales and his brutish SharpClaw army. When flying through the stormy skies in search of the distress signal, they were attacked by the SharpClaw Galleon, causing Krystal to lose her Staff in the process. After exploring the Flying Galleon, Krystal soon encountered General Scales in person on deck, and they quickly came to blows with each other over his ambitions of conquest, but leaving the warlord far behind to continue finding the source of the distress call.

After the CloudRunner left Krystal at the Krazoa Palace, she found the dying EarthWalker soldier who sent the distress call, who told her all about what caused the six Krazoa Spirits to flee from their sanctuary and become scattered all over the planet. The EarthWalker warned Krystal that the Krazoa outside of their Shrines were in immediate danger of dying, so in an effort to turn the tide of the war and undo the damage Scales wrought, the vixen agreed to help the dinosaurs return the six Krazoa Spirits to the Krazoa Palace and save Dinosaur Planet from destruction. However, Krystal only fared as far as retrieving the first Krazoa Spirit from the bowels of the temple. Upon releasing the spirit into the temple's interior, she was attacked by a then unknown assailant (who she recognised), imprisoning her in a crystalline cell at the top of the palace. Krystal's life-force began to be drained by the crystal, leaving her in mortal danger, until Fox McCloud of the Star Fox Team arrived to help save the planet.

Fox was first contacted by Krystal when he found her Staff in ThornTail Hollow, giving him telepathic instructions on how to effectively use the Staff, and under her guidance, Fox quickly learned he can use it to help him complete his mission. Later on when walking through Moon Mountain Pass, Fox was directly contacted by Krystal when he heard the echoes of her telepathic cries for help, then learning from a Krazoa Spirit that Krystal released implored Fox to save her by returning the rest of the Krazoa Spirits. Fox was initially reluctant to do this, but the Krazoa prompted him to carry out what she started as she was now depending on him, for her life. When taking his first Spirit back to Krazoa Palace, Fox then quickly became determined to save Krystal's life once he saw her in person, still trapped inside the crystal. After the Krazoa Spirits were returned to the palace, Krystal was apparently brainwashed by the supposed Krazoa Spirit to channel the absolute energy of the six Krazoa Spirits into the statue, creating a "mighty Krazoa God". No longer needing Krystal, the crystal prison was shattered and she was left to fall from her hanging cell. Fortunately, Fox caught her before she could fall to her death. Before things could get chivalrous however, Krystal took her staff back, and began shooting at the "mighty Krazoa God". Fox, disappointed, gave chase to the thing with his Arwing. Finally, the Krazoa God revealed himself to actually be Andross, Fox's arch-enemy. With aid from Falco Lombardi, Andross was defeated again by Fox, and Dinosaur Planet was healed by the combined might of the six rescued Krazoa Spirits, putting the world back together again.

In the aftermath that followed, Krystal sought to apologize to him for her actions and thank him for all of his help. Krystal initially sent this as a message, but then she also docked in the Great Fox to thank Fox and his assembled team in person. Fox responded in a rather shy manner, and was met with teasing from a couple of his fellow crew members. ROB 64 noticed and reported Fox's rising temperature for everyone to hear. Fox replied that he'll be just fine, as he and Krystal shared a smile to each other.

Fortuna

While chasing down Andrew Oikonny through planet Fortuna, Krystal demonstrated her telepathic abilities by quickly warning the team that Oikonny's forces are preparing an ambush when they arrived at his base. Star Fox would eventually find Oikonny, only for a strange creature to quickly destroy Oikonny's warship, and fire directly at Krystal, almost hitting her (in the North American version of Star Fox Assault. Other regions like Japan would see Slippy almost get hit instead.). The creature would then be found to be an Aparoid, who's entire species would invade the Lylat System.

Katina

The team were dispatched there to locate a distress signal, and while Krystal wanted to assist Fox directly, she was instead ordered with the rest of the team to cover him with Arwing support. Krystal briefly ran into trouble, but was rescued by Fox. An Aparoid Ship attacked McCloud, and it was Krystal who pointed out its weakness.

Sargasso Space Zone

The Star Fox team headed to the Sargasso Hideout to find Pigma Dengar, who stole the Walker's core memory, something the team needed in order to fight the Aparoid Invasion. Krystal and Falco were tasked with destroying enemy fighter-craft outside the hideout. When Star Wolf arrived at their location, Fox rescued Krystal from several fighters. After Fox shoots down the rival team, its newest member, Panther Caroso, became overwhelmed by Krystal's beauty, so overwhelmed that he revealed Pigma's location to Krystal: planet Fichina.

Fichina

On Fichina's frozen surface, Fox destroyed the shield generators hindering access to the planet's climate control center, while the team, including Krystal, backed him up later in the mission. Afterwards, Pigma made an appearance, and turned the main engineering tower into an Aparoid, threatening to destroy the climate control center, causing Krystal to express disgust at Pigma's actions. Fox destroyed it and saved Fichina.

Meteo Asteroid Belt

At the Meteo Asteroid Belt, Star Wolf seemed to have been destroyed, but Krystal's senses told her that they had abandoned ship. A horde of Aparoids appeared, a couple of them chasing Krystal later through the belt. Fox destroyed them, and Krystal rewarded him with a Supply Ring. After getting out of an abandoned base that they had infiltrated, Krystal noticed Pigma Dengar's ship drifting in space, and then noticed Pigma himself doing something strange: he was merging with some kind of machine to become an Aparoid. Star Fox would destroy this Aparoid, along with whatever was left of Pigma's being, and recover the Core Memory.

Sauria

After sending the Core Memory to General Pepper, Krystal interrupted his briefing to the team by highlighting a distress signal coming from Sauria. Krystal and Fox went straight in to fight on foot, while Falco and Slippy took to the skies. During the mission, Krystal cleared an entire temple of Aparoids, and wondered about Tricky; She's likely heard of, or she knew Tricky prior to this event, it seems. After the Aparoids were defeated, Krystal and Fox stayed to look for Tricky, but he already found them just after they started. They were all happy to see each other.

Corneria

Celebrations were brief, as the team received a distress call from Corneria, which had been overrun by the Aparoids. Krystal was tailed once again, but Fox also saved her again. She also reluctantly decided to ride the wing of Panther's Wolfen, but only as long as she could cover Fox.

Orbital Gate

The entire Star Fox team, and even Star Wolf, fought Aparoids at the Orbital Gate to defend it so it could send them to Aparoid City while Beltino Toad finished work on a self-destruct program that will destroy the enemy. Krystal and Slippy were tailed, but manged to survive by maneuvering around the Gate until Fox could catch up and save them.

Aparoid Homeworld

After defending the gate from Aparoid missiles, Star Fox journeyed with the Cornerian Army to the Aparoid Homeworld to end the Invasion once and for all. At the surface of a base just above the planet's main underground tunnel, Krystal and Fox, backed up by air cover, destroyed the base's reproductive units, and eventually deactivated the shield protecting the planet's tunnel. It then activated a secondary shield before Star Fox could enter, forcing Peppy and ROB to crash the Great Fox into the shield, leaving Krystal and the team to believe that Peppy and ROB were killed. They eventually came to face with The Aparoid Queen herself, and after a long struggle, defeated her, causing Beltino's self-destruct program to work, destroying the queen and all Aparoids present. Fox and the team were able to make it out of the home world before it exploded. Seconds after Krystal mentioned Peppy and Star Wolf's sacrifices, Peppy and R.O.B. made contact, having survived the crash into the shield.

In the events following the Aparoid Invasion, Fox had a growing concern for Krystal's safety and had her discharged from the team, which caused Krystal to adopt a bitter temperament. Heartbroken, she left and was not heard from again until the Anglar Army invaded Lylat.

Anglar Emperor Path

After joining the Star Wolf team out of jealousy, Krystal began a relationship with Panther Caroso. Fox learns this from Falco, who tells him that Krystal was with Star Wolf. Fox decides to track her down. He finds her at Sector Z, which is overrun with Anglars, but they defeat them all, with the help of Krystal. Fox apologizes for his actions and asks her to rejoin Star Fox, and Krystal complies, reuniting the team. She tells Fox that she and Star Wolf have defeated the Anglar base at Venom, but their emperor and the remains of his army escaped to the Asteroid Belt. She helps in the battle at the Asteroid Belt against Emperor Anglar. The Star Fox team takes him down, along with his remaining forces, and are once again saviors of Lylat. Star Wolf sends a message to Star Fox, which reveals that Panther is deeply upset by Krystal's leaving them. Months later, Krystal sadly leaves Fox to rejoin Star Wolf (due to the relationship that was not properly fixed) by apologizing to Fox, leaving the leader totally heartbroken by her decision.

Fox and Krystal Path

After Krystal disappeared, Fox and the team haven't heard from her. That is when Fox decides to track her down. He finds her on Katina, and urges her to join, but Krystal insults him, revealing that she is part of Star Wolf. Nonetheless, Fox helps defeat the Anglars on the Planet. After the battle, Fox doesn't give up, and tries to get her back, but Krystal is still acting nasty to him. She does consider this though, and says for him to apologize, then she'll think about it. Fox does, and despite Panthers protests, she joins. They meet up with the rest of the team, and to their surprise Krystal has changed. She tells Fox how to get to Venom. Andross had created a device to neutralize the Venom sea, and he hid it on Titania. They go there and defeat the bio-weapon guarding it, and head to Venom. On the way, Slippy is somehow able to get through to Krystal that Fox and her are meant to be together. At Venom, they kill the Anglar Emperor, and emerge victorious. Fox convinces Krystal to join, and that they are meant for each other. Team Star Fox is together again, with the new addition of Amanda, Slippy's fiancee.

Good-bye, Fox path

After team Star Fox defeated the Anglars, they go their separate ways. Fox finds Krystal on Sauria and she forgives him, they get married, and have a son named Marcus, who will be the future leader of Star Fox someday.

Star Wolf Returns path

After Fox finds Krystal on Katina, he tries to make her return, but to no avail. They rendezvous with Wolf, who found the device that neutralizes the Venomian sea. They head there, and defeat the Anglars. Star Wolf are recognized as heroes now, but people are calling Krystal a traitor. Krystal ultimately leaves Star Wolf, goes far away, becoming a bounty Hunter known as Kursed. On Kew, she and Fox cross paths, but he hardly recognized her.

Lucy and Krystal Path

Lucy Hare is on Corneria, trying to liberate the Planet from Anglars. There, she meets Krystal, Amanda, and Katt, who agree to help. They defeat the garrison, and the Splitter. They then get the news that Star Fox has defeated Emperor Anglar. Krystal is ready to forgive Fox, and when he and the team return to Corneria, she rejoins Star Fox, and forgives Fox.

Behind the scenes

  • Originally, when the game Star Fox Adventures was still being developed as Dinosaur Planet, Krystal had a much larger role in the game, and was revealed to be the adopted sister of the other protagonist, Sabre. This all changed, however, when it was decided that the game should become a Star Fox title.
    • It should be noted that Krystal's appearance in Dinosaur Planet was feline instead of her final vulpine appearance in Star Fox Adventures.
  • The band for the necklace on Krystal's forehead seems to change in-between games. As in Adventures, it seems to be made of beads, and in Assault, it looks like a metal ring.
  • In most Star Fox Adventures artwork, Krystal is seen with Fox. This relates to an alternative outcome of the game as evident in unused voice acting.
    • More unused dialogue for Adventures has revealed that Krystal's distress calls heard at Moon Mountain Pass were also recorded in English, meaning these would have been used rather than Dino Talk. It is unknown why Rare used the Dino language recordings, as Fox had his working translator at the time and Dino Talk isn't Krystal's native language anyway.
  • Despite playing an important role in Star Fox Adventures, Krystal is only playable once at the very beginning of the game, although she can be played as through Action Replay or GameShark as a model swap for Fox.
