Stop moving, so I can squash you!
—Granga

Granga's Mech (グランガ) is a bipedal, walking war machine manufactured in the weapons labs on Macbeth, driven by Granga, one of Andross's most trusted lieutenants, during the Lylat Wars.

Appearance

The giant robot itself is several stories tall, red and bipedal, and stands on two rickety legs with a pair of missile launcher "arms". A large green backpack-shaped device, possibly the robot's power source, is attached to its back plate. Andross's insignia is printed on its chest. It is accompanied by fleets of support craft, including the Granga Fighters.

History

Andross's evil ambition has served as a magnet to attract the scum of the Lylat system into his service. Granga was one of the most powerful and intelligent of his followers, haven been promoted to positions of leadership in Andross's military machine, and given command of a specialized war machine of great power. Andross dispatched his key lieutenants Granga and the Attack Carrier's captain to seize the main strategic location in the Lylat system, Corneria. When Fox McCloud headed to Corneria, he encountered Granga at a grassy field beyond the seas behind Corneria City, where the ape threatened to crush him and his team. Peppy Hare advised Fox to aim for the droid's most vulnerable weak point at the back. Fox also found that he could make Granga's mech fall over by destroying its legs. The second he did so, Granga's robot toppled over. Fox then shot the precious power supply pack on the walker's back. Like each fighter pilot, Granga willingly lamented that he'd failed his Emperor before his mech exploded, killing him.

In the game

In Star Fox 64/3D, if the Attack Carrier is not spotted by Falco due to his absence or the seven stone arches are skipped, Granga will be Star Fox's opponent on Corneria, earning the player a simple "Mission Complete" rather than the more satisfactory "Mission Accomplished". Afterwards, the route will go straight to the Meteo Asteroid Field.

Methods of attack

Granga is perhaps the easiest of the bosses in Star Fox 64/3D, serving as more of a tutorial to All-Range Mode. His mech is armed with a variety of weapons, but the only ones which can really harm you or your wingmen are his missiles, and even then only if you take an inordinately long time to defeat him. Destroying the arms on the mech will prevent Granga from firing missiles, but note that if you later shoot off his legs he will somehow regain his missile capability.

  • If the player manages to successfully somersault over and beneath Granga without colliding in the process, they will be rewarded with an extra life. Shooting off its weapons and head will also reward the player with Supply Rings or Smart Bombs.

Weakness

Granga's weakness is the green rectangular power pack on his back. Depending on his movements it may be a little difficult to line up a good strafing run, but this can easily be solved by blowing off his legs and immobilizing him. Note that destroying the legs will allow him to fire missiles even if they were previously destroyed his arm launchers...but this shouldn't matter much, as once he's a sitting duck he can be finished off in a matter of seconds.

Enemy Recon

Granga is actually the little ape who drives the huge bot boss at the end of Route 1. He thinks he's safe in the huge walker, but the bot is one of the most vulnerable targets in the game.

Legs

Blast the legs out from under the bot so it won't be able to run around. It will be a sitting duck.

In the Manga

Granga and his Mech makes an appearance in the Star Fox 64 manga. The Star Fox Team eventually reach Granga, discovering that he is fully armed with missiles and grenades. Slippy scans Granga for weaknesses and suggests to Fox that a shot to the leg will destroy him. Fox makes a successful shot with one hit, causing Granga to topple over to his destruction. According to the manga, the walker Granga was in was called the Technodroid.

Trivia

  • It is unknown what the purpose of Granga's Mech is. It was possibly sent to Corneria to command the ground forces, while the Attack Carrier deployed the air forces.
  • In the official guide for Star Fox 64, Granga was stated to be the name of the pilot of the mech. However, in the 3DS version, the name appeared to be attributed to the mech itself via the boss subtitles.
  • In the 3DS release, Granga now states "Hey... I can't move!" when his mech falls over from having its legs shot off.
  • Granga's mech slightly resembles an AT-ST from Star Wars.
