Krystal has been featured in three Star Fox games as both a playable and supporting character.
Krystal's debut in the Star Fox series is marked here in "Adventures". She is the alternate protagonist of the game; the player plays both as her and Fox McCloud, and the two eventually meet at the end of the game. She possesses the ability to speak with the dinosaurs and can also speak English, although her main language is Dino. Krystal's playability serves as an introduction to the game, teaching the nature of basic controls, the items and C-stick inventory and collecting the Krazoa Spirits. Because she is not a member of Star Fox yet, Krystal's pause menu only has access to the Nintendo GameCube memory card and quit options.
Instruction Booklet description[]
- “The only survivor of her doomed home planet of Cerinia, Krystal roams the galaxy in search of answers. When a distress call takes her to a small planet in the Lylat system, Krystal suspects that she may finally be drawing closer to the truth...”
- —Star Fox Adventures Instruction Booklet
Behind the scenes[]
- Originally, when "Adventures" was still being developed as Dinosaur Planet, Krystal had a much larger role in the game, and was revealed to be the adopted sister of the other protagonist, Sabre. This all changed, however, when it was decided that the game should become a game within the Star Fox series. It should be noted that Krystal's appearance in "Dinosaur Planet" was feline instead of her final vulpine appearance in "Adventures".
- In most "Star Fox Adventures" artwork, Krystal is seen with Fox and Tricky. This relates to an alternative outcome of the game as evident in unused voice acting.
- More unused dialogue for "Adventures" has revealed that Krystal's distress calls heard at Moon Mountain Pass were also recorded in English, meaning these would have been used rather than Dino Talk. It is unknown why Rare used the Dino language recordings, as Fox had his working translator at the time and Dino Talk isn't Krystal's native language anyway.
- Some unused dialogue for "Adventures" indicated that Fox freed Krystal earlier and somewhere close to the end of the game. Presumably, Fox offered her to join the team and she would accept if he kissed her.
Portrayal[]
In "Adventures", Krystal's voice was provided by Rare employee and occasional voice over Estelle Ellis, who was previously providing her voice in the development of "Dinosaur Planet".
Krystal appears in "Assault". Her relationship with Fox is strengthening, and she is now a full, but still new, member of the Star Fox team. Krystal serves as the telepath of the team. She is able to sense distress signals from different planets and can read the thought patterns of certain Aparoid units. Saving Krystal from tailing Aparoids will cause her to fly by Fox and give a Silver Ring for helping out. In "Assault", Krystal meets Panther, who makes numerous passes at her during both the dogfight and while the Star Wolf team is helping Star Fox in the Aparoid Tunnel.
Instruction Booklet description[]
- “The newest member of the team. Krystal's a mysterious young woman with extrasensory perception; she uses her talent to foresee danger and aid her teammates.”
- —Star Fox: Assault Instruction Booklet
Multiplayer[]
Krystal is available as a playable character in Versus Mode. Her stats are much lower than the others, and she has one special ability, which is two Barrier Spheres instead of one when revived. While using Krystal, one may consider giving her handicap.
Because of her low overall stats, Krystal is probably the most difficult character to play. The best way to make use of her is to use her special skill. When timing the barriers right, it's possible to deal a lot of damage before the barrier disappears. An effective way of using the barrier advantage is to cook grenades while trying to get close to an opponent. The explosion won't hurt Krystal as long as a barrier is still active. Using the Arwing or Landmaster is not recommended.
Behind the scenes[]
- During the pre-battle cutscene of the Winged Aparoid in the North American version of "Assault", it is Krystal who the creature almost hits. In other regions like Japan, it is changed to Slippy who almost get hit instead.
Portrayal[]
In "Assault", Krystal was voiced by Alésia Glidewell, who also proved the voice of the Aparoid Queen. She would later reprise the role in the "Super Smash Bros. series", starting from the Smash Taunts in "SSBB".
Krystal plays a major role in "Command". Her relationship with Fox has elevated, but it eventually becomes very rocky. In certain endings, the two are either together or apart. In Command, Krystal pilots her own space fighter, the Cloud Runner, named after the CloudRunner dinosaur tribe.
Instruction Booklet description[]
- “A former member of team Star Fox. She's strong and kind, but can be overly stubborn as well.”

Ending 1 - Fox and Krystal[]
After defeating the Anglar Emperor, Falco and Slippy begin to celebrate. Fox, on the other hand, tries to convince Krystal to rejoin the team. Krystal refuses at first, but after some input from Falco and Slippy, and a promise from Fox that they would always be together, Krystal eventually agrees and reunites with Fox. Amanda also becomes the fifth member of the team.
Ending 2 - Good-bye, Fox[]
After the defeat of the Anglar Emperor on Venom Fox decides that he will leave Star Fox so that he can be with Krystal, and the team agrees, with some reluctance on Falco's behalf, to disband. Fox promises that he will spend the rest of his life as a quiet one living with Krystal, who happily forgives him. The two have a son, named Marcus, who in the future leads a new Star Fox team.
Ending 3 - The Anglar Emperor[]
After Star Fox defeats the Anglars at the Asteroid Belt, they receive a transmission from Star Wolf, showing both Wolf's frustration at having his work go unnoticed and Panther's 'acceptance' that Krystal has decided to rejoin Star Fox.
Several months later, Krystal decided that she can't handle the situation anymore, so she goes back to Panther and to Star Wolf. Despite Fox's objections, Krystal leaves regardless, where she starts a new life, and Fox is left to wander alone and unloved.
Ending 4 - Star Wolf Returns[]
After Star Wolf's victory over the Anglars on Venom, Wolf still feels unsatisfied. Krystal explains that it was because they had to cheat Star Fox to do so. Leon, on the other hand, is overjoyed that they can get the bounty lifted, and expects a celebration in their honor. Indeed, Star Wolf is praised for their efforts, but the people of Lylat are less kind to Krystal, believing that it was wrong of her to abandon Star Fox.
Eventually, the comments of the populace become unbearable, as they start to hiss as she walks by, or would even outright declare her a traitor. She pulls away from Star Wolf to find a new life, fleeing to a distant galaxy and going under the name of Kursed (according to the English version). She becomes a bounty hunter, chasing the worst in the galaxy. Some unspecified time later, she runs into Fox on the planet Kew, but has changed so much that Fox doesn't appear to recognize her.
Ending 5 - Lucy and Krystal[]
Krystal, along with Katt, Amanda, and Lucy set up a celebration for Fox, Falco, Slippy and Peppy upon their return from defeating the Anglar forces at Titania and Venom. She has a conversation with Fox the moment they have the time to themselves and willingly reconciles with him through the confession of their love for each other. Krystal accepts his offer of rejoining Star Fox.

Krystal makes a cameo appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a trophy, 3 stickers, and can be seen on the Lylat Cruise stage whenever Fox, Falco, or Wolf performs their secret taunt.

Krystal has three stickers which are taken from artwork from all three of her game appearances, and are all only usable by the Star Fox series fighters.
Krystal appears in the fourth game as a trophy, looking almost unchanged from before. The info seems to add more curiosity around her relationship with Fox, concerning her telepathic abilities. She is absent from the Orbital gate Smash Taunts despite being a major character in Star Fox: Assault.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Krystal appears as an Assist Trophy, resembling her Adventures design and using her Staff to aid the player that released her. Similar to other Assist Trophies like Alucard and Zero, Krystal behaves more like a traditional fighter with the ability to dash, double jump and run, alternating between melee strikes with her Staff and using the Ice Blaster to freeze enemies solid. She can also be knocked out if she sustains too much damage. She uses recycled voice clips from her appearance in Assault's multiplayer mode.
