Fangle (ファングル Fan guru), also referred to by several names like Aparoid Beetle, Beetle Aparoid, Aparoid Bomber or Bomber Aparoid, is a special type of aerial Aparoid unit that appears in four Missions of Assault.
Characteristics[]
The Fangle is a large floating Aparoid resembling a beetle or cockroach, or even a combination of the two. It has four appendages, two for steering and two for firing. These units are bigger and slower than the more common Messers, but they carry more weapons and are far more durable. They are armed with a forward facing laser cannon that, like typical Aparoid fighters, is green, red or purple in color, The creature is also capable of firing missiles for self-defense as well. The missiles can only be avoided by somersaults, U-Turns, or barrel-rolling just before it hits you.
In the game[]
Mission 6: Sauria[]
The Fangles comprise a portion of the Aparoid invasion force in the skies of Sauria.
Mission 8: Orbital Gate[]
Fangles also comprised part of the Aparoid space forces sent to attack the Orbital Gate, unsuccessfully trying to attack it with missiles.
Mission 9: Aparoid Homeworld[]
Fangles are also present in the skies and underground tunnels of the Aparoid Homeworld. These also comprise the Aparoid air forces that harass Fox and his teammates as they try to destroy the Aparoid Hatchers underneath the base.
Mission 10: Homeworld Core[]
An enhanced version of this enemy appears in the underground tunnels of the Aparoid Homeworld. It is much rarer than the Messerds and Guidarts, but it is still an deadly foe that prefers to travel in small swarms. This variant fires semi-repeating lasers with an red-orange tint instead of the usual green homing projectiles fired by its more common counterpart. It is also easily distinguished by its silver gray coloration. With the death of their Queen and the destruction of their homeworld, these units perished along with the rest of their kind.
Official Data[]
- “Fangles: Durable Aparoids. The ones that appear in Mission 10 attack with red bullets, while the others attack with green tracking bullets. Defeating them results in 2 HITs.”
- —Official description from the Star Fox Assault Nintendo Official Guidebook (translated from Japanese)
- “Fangle
A spider-shaped Aparoid. It fires beams and missiles, and in all-range stages, it can attack from behind with a quick attack. Its defense is somewhat high, so use a charge attack to take it down.”
- —Description from the Star Fox Assault Perfect Guide (translated from Japanese)

Trivia[]
Fangle's design is likely inspired by the Galaga enemy from Namco's 1981 arcade game of the same name (which is also where the Aparoids likely draw inspiration from, considering that the former was made by Namco).
