Cume (キューム Kyūmu), also referred to as Aparoid Latcher or Stringy Aparoid, is a special type of aerial Aparoid unit that appears only in Mission 5 of Assault (although it re-appears in the cutscene where Peppy makes his sacrifice, only in massive swarms). Hence their fan-given nickname, they resemble floppy cords and will use their modified forelimbs to latch themselves onto passing spacecraft.
Gameplay[]
After passing the Madokite, there is a span of empty space, where the white stringy threads are twirling in one spot like a field of space mines. It is a good idea to shoot the Cumes down from a distance, because they can be a problem when they cluster around the Arwing and siphon off shielding if they latch on. Using barrel rolls can shrug them off.
Missions[]
Mission 5: Meteo
The Cumes appear in large numbers amidst the asteroid belt.
Mission 9: Aparoid Homeworld[]
While they did not actually appear during the assault on the Aparoid Homeworld, the Cumes reappear again in the cutscene prior to the final stage of the game. They appear crawling on the Great Fox in large numbers while it is covered in what appears to be organic structures on the outside. Afterwards, Peppy uses the Great Fox to ram it directly into the energy shield that protects the Aparoid Homeworld so that the rest of the team can go inside and finish off the Aparoid threat for good. While the flagship starts to explode and fall apart, the Cumes have also been flung into outer space while some still cling onto the massive flagship. What happen to them afterwards is unknown, though it is likely possible that they were wiped out after the Great Fox self-destructed itself (and to an greater extent, the death of the Queen and the destruction of the Homeworld).

- “Cume
Mission Appearance: 5
An Aparoid that only appears in Mission 5. It will attach itself to the Arwing to reduce its shield, but it can be evaded by rolling. Its low defenses mean that it can be easily defeated with a single hit from the Smart Bomb.”
